Six months after the violent suppression of the nationwide protests in January 2026, Amnesty International is warning that the gravest human rights violations could be repeated in Iran.

Thousands Killed and Systematic Repression

During the protests in January 2026, Iranian security forces used extreme violence against demonstrators. According to reports, thousands of people were killed.

At the same time, the authorities shut down the internet and prevented independent reporting.

According to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Iran, Mai Sato, more than 5,000 people lost their lives.

Since then, human rights organisations have reported arbitrary arrests, intimidation of family members, and the executions of political prisoners and protesters.

Demand for International Accountability

Amnesty International is calling for the establishment of an independent international justice mechanism.

The United Nations Security Council should refer the situation to the International Criminal Court.

Germany is being urged to open investigations under the principle of universal jurisdiction, provide protection to human rights defenders who are at risk, and introduce a nationwide moratorium on deportations to Iran.
